May 1, 2006

The Clayton High School Alumni Association held its Annual Meeting at the Media Center, Clayton High School, on Monday night, May 1, 2006. Bucky Coats, Class of 1956 and President, presided.  The Clayton High School Alumni Association, Inc. was founded in 2004 and is a tax-exempt Section 501 (C) 3 organization as described in the Internal Revenue Code.
Treasurer Linda Alsobrooks reported that the Association had $5,320.66 in our checking account.  Bucky Coats thanked all Associates for their contributions and advised that the Alumni Association would award four (4) $1,000.00 scholarships to the Clayton High School Class of 2006.  17 students have applied for the scholarships. The Scholarship Committee of Gwen Allen Canady (Chair), Emily Barden Bagley and Andy Pleasant will review the applications and conduct interviews and select the four recipients of the scholarship awards.
The Alumni Association voted to designate one of the annual scholarships the James O. Waters Memorial Scholarship.  Mr. Waters career in education spanned four decades working in North Carolina schools, including a 30-year stint as principal of Clayton High School. He was principal of Clayton High School from 1951 until his retirement in 1981. In 1955, the high school annual was dedicated to him for his interest and inspiring belief in students as individuals and for his willingness to help with their problems.  Throughout his service at Clayton High School he touched the lives of generations of graduates. The Scholarship Committee will select the recipient of this scholarship.
The Alumni Association will have a booth at the September 16, 2006, Harvest Festival and will need volunteers to staff the booth.  It was further agreed that the Association would continue to mail our Newsletter to current Associates as well as prospective associates and Clayton business.  The editor of the Newsletter is Jan Johnson who also serves as a Director of the Association.
President Coats thanked Hugh Myers for his work as the Association's webmaster.  The web site address is: www.claytonalumni.com.

Bucky Coats thanked the three Directors (Bobby Alsobrooks, Linda Pittman Alsobrooks and Billy O'Neil)  whose terms ended on May 1, 2006.

The Alumni Board elected Ramona Brady Robertson ('84), Dan Wall ('58) and Sharon Spence Whitley('83) as Directors for the term ending in May 2009.  Ramona Robertson was also elected Treasurer.  In addition to the three new Directors and Treasurer the following serve on the Board: President Bucky Coats ('56), Vice-President Andy Pleasant ('69), Secretary Allen Tew ('62), Director Jan Johnson ('80) and Donna McDowell White ('67).
In closing the annual meeting Coats reminded attendees that Alumni Association Associates are asked to contribute a minimum of $10.00 annually.  Contributions should be made payable to the Clayton High School Alumni Association and mailed to: P.O. Box 1015, Clayton, N.C. 27528. In our two years of existence the Alumni Association has made good progress but we have only scratched the surface of our potential. There are many graduating seniors at Clayton High School that need and deserve the financial support of CHS Alumni, former faculty and friends. For addition information please contact Bucky Coats at (919) 550-5719 or e-mail: claytonalumni@aol.com.  Please include your name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address and class year if applicable when mailing in annual contributions.

BUSINESS

The following items of business were raised, discussed and acted upon as indicated:

1.   1.  The Harvest Festival will he held on Saturday, September 20, 2008. The Alumni Association will have a booth as in previous years. It was suggested that members also work up and down the street in order to contact people who may not come by the booth.

Upon a motion made and seconded, it was unanimously agreed and resolved that the newsletter will only be sent to contributors and new prospects. Several have expressed an interest in getting together other than at the annual meeting and Harvest Festival. Curtis Jones has agreed to open Jones Cafe for an evening event if there is enough interest. Dennis has agreed to coordinate the event. There was general consensus to proceed.
